The dowling Wedding
Some wedding days are beautiful because of the details. Some are beautiful because of the people. And every once in a while, you get a day where both are just so good. Emma and Virgil’s wedding at The Lodge at Melan Farm in Baxley, Georgia was one of those days. From the soft blue details and gorgeous florals to the sweetest bridal party, an outdoor ceremony surrounded by greenery, and a reception full of personality, their entire day felt elegant without losing the warmth and fun that made it theirs. And when I saw Emma in her wedding dress? I cried. There was no avoiding it. She was absolutely stunning.
Emma and Virgil’s story began long before this wedding day. They met in high school, and years later, Virgil chose a place that represented their future together to ask Emma to marry him. On September 5, 2025, he proposed on a piece of land he had recently purchased with plans to turn it into a cow pasture And truly, could there be a setting more fitting for their story? Their two golden retrievers, Murphy and Maui, were there running around as the sun set over the open land. Virgil told Emma that he wanted to start their future together right there—the place where he was already beginning to build some of his dreams. Then he got down on one knee. Of course, Emma said yes.
It wasn’t an elaborate proposal for the sake of being elaborate. It was meaningful because it reflected the life they were building together. Their dogs. Their land. Their future. Their story.
Opposites Really Do Attract Emma describes the two of them as complete opposites, which somehow makes them the perfect match. Virgil loves an early morning in a deer stand. Emma would much rather sleep in and wake up to coffee that someone else made. (Honestly, I understand the vision here.) But underneath those differences is such a sweet balance. Emma says Virgil keeps her grounded, while she keeps life a little brighter—and cleaner—for him. That dynamic showed up throughout their wedding day, too. There was so much genuine joy between them. Nothing felt forced or overly serious. They could soak in the significance of becoming husband and wife while still laughing, celebrating, and simply being themselves.

The Lodge at Melan Farm was such a beautiful backdrop for the beginning of their day.
Surrounded by trees, the Lodge has a clean, modern style with plenty of warmth from its natural wood details. The neutral spaces allowed Emma’s soft blue, white, green, and gold wedding palette to shine. Emma spent the morning surrounded by her bridesmaids, and I loved seeing all of those blue dresses hanging together before everyone got ready. Different shades, textures, and patterns gave the bridal party such a soft, collected look while still feeling cohesive. Her wedding details carried that same feeling. The delicate stationery, blue and white florals, rings, and touches of gold all worked together without feeling like they were trying too hard. And then there was Emma herself.
Seeing her completely ready was one of those moments that got me. I cried when I saw her in her dress! She looked absolutely radiant, and there was something so special about seeing the girl everyone had been celebrating all morning suddenly look like a bride.

One of the things that makes The Lodge at Melan Farm so special is the flexibility of the property. The venue offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, with the Lodge surrounded by trees that give the celebration a sense of privacy while still feeling open and inviting.Emma and Virgil’s outdoor ceremony looked beautiful against all that greenery. Wooden chairs filled the lawn, while blue, white, and green florals framed the ceremony space. I especially loved the tall blue-and-white vessels used throughout the day. They brought a little bit of that classic, collected feeling from the reception outside into the natural setting. It was elegant, but it still felt relaxed. And once Emma and Virgil were officially husband and wife, it was time to celebrate.
A Reception Filled With Personal Details
This is where so much of Emma and Virgil’s personality really started showing up.
The reception continued the blue-and-white color palette with soft greenery, warm wooden chairs, gold accents, and blue-and-white vessels filled with florals. Southern Belle Accents helped bring the reception details together and kept setup and décor moving efficiently throughout the day. But some of my favorite things to photograph weren’t necessarily the biggest details. They were the personal ones. Family photographs were displayed throughout the reception, including a beautiful memorial area honoring loved ones who couldn’t be there. These are the kinds of details that mean even more as the years pass because they remind you not only of how your wedding looked, but of the people who are part of your story. And, naturally, Murphy and Maui needed to be represented too. Their pups made the sweetest little appearances throughout the bar details, from photos to custom drink accessories. Considering these two golden retrievers were there when Virgil proposed, it only seems right that they got their moment at the wedding too.
Custom Cocktails and Some Seriously Good Food
Okay, we need to talk about the bar. Monke Mobile Bartending was absolutely elite.
They’re true mixologists, and the experience went far beyond simply serving drinks. They brought their own setup and created custom cocktails for Emma and Virgil’s celebration, complete with personalized cups and thoughtful garnishes. It was one of those vendor experiences where the service itself became part of what guests got to enjoy—and obviously, I loved photographing all of those colorful drinks too. And then there was the food. Zel’s Catering never disappoints, and this wedding was no exception. The entire spread was abundant, beautiful, and inviting, with a full taco bar and all the toppings. Even the food displays worked seamlessly with the florals, greenery, gold serving pieces, and overall design of the reception. Beautiful and delicious is always a win.
THE KIND OF WEDDING DAY THAT FEELS LIKE THEM
What I loved most about Emma and Virgil’s wedding wasn’t just that it photographed beautifully—although it absolutely did. It felt like them. The pretty things weren’t there just to be pretty.
There were photographs of people they loved. Their dogs were woven into the celebration. Their guests were treated to custom drinks and incredible food. There were polished, timeless details alongside personal pieces that told you something about the two people everyone had gathered to celebrate. And then there were all the moments you could never put on a mood board. Groomsmen laughing and piling onto Virgil. Bridesmaids gathered around Emma. Quiet moments between the newlyweds. Family photographs. Hugs. Laughter. And a reception where everyone could finally relax and celebrate. Those are the pieces that tell the whole story. Because years from now, Emma and Virgil won’t only want to remember what the tables looked like or which flowers they chose. They’ll want to remember how it felt. How it felt to stand surrounded by their favorite people. The nerves before the ceremony. The laughter afterward. The little things they probably didn’t even realize were happening while I was photographing them. And yes, they’ll probably want to remember some of those hilarious reception moments too. ;) Emma and Virgil, what an absolute dream of a wedding day. From a high school love story to a proposal in the pasture where you’re building your future, and now becoming husband and wife surrounded by the people who love you most—what a gift it was to document this chapter for you. Here’s to all the ordinary mornings, big dreams, golden retrievers, cow pastures, cups of coffee, and beautiful memories still ahead.
MORE THAN JUST THE PRETTY DETAILS
This is why I love photographing wedding days the way I do. Of course I want you to have beautiful portraits and photographs of every detail you spent months choosing—but I also want to preserve the things you didn't plan. The way your people loved you. The laughter happening across the room. Your grandmother's photograph sitting on a table. Your best friends losing it on the dance floor. The tiny details that tell your story and the in-between moments you didn't even realize I was photographing. Because eventually the flowers will be gone, the last custom cocktail will be served, and the reception will end. But these photographs get to hold onto what all of it felt like.
And that will always matter more to me than simply creating pretty pictures.
